Why would an organization wish to undertake an Environmental Audit?
Some of the reasons why an Organization may wish to undertake an Environmental Audit are Audits enable the management of an organization to see exactly what is happening within the organization and to check the operation (or otherwise) of systems and procedures. Some Environmental Auditing programs have been motivated by the occurrence of an environmental problem or incident, that is, a reactive response; others have been established in response to a desire to anticipate and head off potential problems, that is, the organization takes a proactive stance.

The incentives for environmental auditing, and the objectives an Organization will have in undertaking such an audit, have diversified since the early days of Environmental Auditing. This diversification reflects the increasing awareness of environmental issues, which is present in society as a whole, and the realization by organizations of the need to integrate these issues into all aspects of their activities.
